7 Amazing Dental Facts You Haven't Heard...

There are plenty of myths around that we blindly believe and follow, often being passed down from generation to generation.  Dental health is a whole science in itself and there is a lot more to it than what meets the eye!

Here are seven interesting facts to bust those myths...

7. The commonly used practice of putting a cap on toothbrush is actually more detrimental. The moisture entrapped in the cap favors bacterial growth.

6. People who tend to drink 3 or more glasses of soda/pop daily have 62% more tooth decay, fillings and tooth loss than others.

5. You are supposed to replace your toothbrush after you have an episode of flu, cold or other viral infections. Notorious microbes can implant themselves on the toothbrush bristles leading to re-infection.

4. The first toothbrush with bristles was manufactured in China in 1498. Bristles from hogs, horses and badgers were used. The first commercial toothbrush was made in 1938.

3. You are not supposed to brush within 6 feet of a toilet. The airborne particles from the flush can travel up to a distance of 6 feet.
2. New born babies are born with sterile mouths, therefore they do not have the bacteria that leads to tooth decay. Often, the bacteria are transmitted from mother to baby when she kisses the child or blows in hot food/drink before feeding the baby.

1. 75% of the United States population suffers from some stage of periodontal gum disease.

Dr. Tracy C. Shaw Creates Youthful Smiles with Botox® and Dermal Fillers at the Highly Acclaimed Shaw Center for Dental Excellence in Miami Beach, Florida
The Shaw Center for Dental Excellence jumps to the forefront of dentistry, integrating the Art of Botox® and Dermal Fillers with their cosmetic dental practice--now offering patients total facial esthetics. Known to offer the finest in dental treatment, Dr. Tracy C. Shaw of The Shaw Center has now expanded that foundation to include facial enhancements with Botox® and Juvederm®.
One in six dentists now offer Botox and dermal fillers, and that number is growing rapidly. "Dentists are the only healthcare professionals who can practice total facial esthetics because they are the only ones who, in addition to being able to perform Botox and dermal fillers, can actually treat the teeth," according to The American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Dr. Shaw is highly trained and skilled in the art and science of Botox and dermal fillers after having completed extensive training with top specialists in the field of facial cosmetic enhancements.

“A beautiful smile consists of so much more than just the teeth and gums--it includes the fine lines and wrinkles on the lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds and chin. A confident smile will light up the eyes and entire upper third of the face, too. It’s all of that together that makes a beautiful smile and a radiant face. It is a great feeling to be able to provide my patients with such a broad range of state-of-the-art treatments, ranging from cosmetic dentistry and dental implants to Botox and facial fillers. It is the ultimate gratification for me to see their excitement at the end of their treatment," says Dr. Shaw.

Patients of The Shaw Center for Dental Excellence can now enjoy the convenience and comfort of having facial cosmetic enhancements at their regular dental visits. Dr. Shaw is pleased to offer free esthetic consultations for those who are interested in learning about their treatment options.

Dr. Tracy C. Shaw is available at The Shaw Center for Dental Excellence Monday through Friday, as well as evenings and weekends for dental emergencies.

Cosmetic Dentistry

A smile can be the most eye-catching feature of a face. With dentistry's many advances, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped, or misshapen teeth. You now have choices that can help you smile with confidence.

Even the most subtle change in your smile can make a dramatic difference in the way you look and feel about yourself. Talk to your dentist about the options most suitable for you, what your expectations are and the dental fees involved. Some options are:
  • Tooth whitening (bleaching) brightens teeth that are discolored or stained. Bleaching may be done completely in the dental office or the dentist may dispense a system for you to use at home.
  • Bonding can improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, broken, cracked, stained, or have spaces between them. With bonding, tooth-colored materials are applied, or bonded, to the tooth surface.
  • Enamel shaping involves modifying teeth to improve their appearance by removing or contouring enamel. The process, which often is combined with bonding, usually is quick and comfortable and the results can be seen immediately.
  • Veneers are thin custom-made shells designed to cover the front side of teeth. Made of tooth-colored materials, veneers are used to treat spaces between teeth and teeth that are chipped or worn, permanently stained, poorly shaped or slightly crooked.
  • Braces are not just for kids. Orthodontics may be needed if teeth are crooked, crowded or do not meet properly. If your dentist thinks you should see a specialist for treatment, he or she will refer you to an orthodontist.
